Abstract
Diffusion bonding between a hard advanced ceramic mterial, oxygen rich compositional variety of yttrium stabilized silicon-aluminum-oxynitride (α-SiAlON), and 316 grade austenitic stainless steel has been attempted under gas pressure sintering & hot pressing. Diffusion interfaces were characterized by XRD, optical micrograph, SEM, EDS & microhardness measurements. Interdiffusion of elements in both ceramic and steel side and formation of intermediate compounds at the reaction interface indicate that bonding could be achieved between the ceramic and steel only under hot pressing condition at or above 1300oC. Role of diffusing elements vis-à-vis the interface formation is discussed.
