Abstract
Selection of a proper cutting tool plays a significant role in achieving consistent quality and controlling the overall cost in an integrated manufacturing environment. The present paper describes on one hand, a novel method that treats extraction of GD&T and other technical data from STEP AP238. On the other hand, it presents an approach to build of a computer interface support for automatic tool selection for manufacturing features in a turning process. Data-tools were collected from recent Machining Handbook of world’s leading manufacturer of tools, Sandvik Coromant. This application works conjointly with an automatic feature recognition system for rotational part. An example is given to show how this approach, systematically, leads to the choice of mini cutting tool packages for specific machining features.
