Fracture Analysis on Weld Joint of Pressure Vessel

Abstract

Pressure vessels are being commonly used in aerospace and ground applications. Fusion welding is an efficient joining process for manufacturing metallic pressure vessels. As a result of thermally induced plastic deformation during the welding process, the internal stresses namely, the welding residual stresses are developed in the welded components and structures. Residual stresses can have a detrimental effect on the integrity of a structure. Thermo-mechanical finite element analysis has been performed to assess the residual stresses developed in the carbon steel ASTM A288 carbon steel pressure vessel during welding and elasto-plastic analysis to examine the effect of residual stresses on failure pressure of the pressure vessel. And also Fracture analysis has been carried out in butt-welded joint of ASTM A288 steel plates contain transverse through thickness crack at weld considering the residual stresses.
